ICS Alert: DHS Announces Revised Permanent Resident Card

May 17, 2010
ICS

HR managers should be aware that United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has redesigned the “permanent resident card," commonly known as a "green card."  The new cards were issued starting May 11, 2010.  HR managers should expect that new employees will be starting to present the new cards during the I-9 process soon.

The new, tamper-resistant permanent resident card contains enhanced security features that should make it more difficult for document vendors to create fraudulent documents.  The new features also provide HR managers with additional items for potential review when completing Section II of I-9s.  Here is a graphic produced by USCIS that points out some of the key security features:

USCIS has more information about the newly issued green cards available at this link: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=34233893c4888210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=68439c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

Please note that new employees may continue to bring in old versions of DHS and DOJ issued permanent residence cards if they have not expired.  You must accept these cards during the I-9 process.  In addition, some new employees may still have DOJ issued permanent resident cards that do not have an expiration date on them.  You must accept these cards as well.

As always, if you have questions about a card a new employee has presented during the I-9 process, or if you need additional compliance information, please contact us at info@iandcsolutions.com.
